Day 66 – Quebec City – Rest Day

After breakfast Ken’s family and I drove into Levis which sits on the opposite bank of the St. Lawrence river facing the Chateau Frontenac. The town itself is quite nice and has a stunning view of downtown Quebec and the surrounding landscape. From there we took a ferry right to the docks below the city, check out these photos!

Since Ken and Angela had already toured around and I had never been I decided to do some tours on my own. I started with the the ruins of the Chateau St. Louis which fell victim to fire in 1834. However there were many versions of this building starting in 1648 built by governor Charles Huault de Montmagny. The surrounding fort was of course built by Champlain which was also reconstructed many times. The chateau ruins are under the wooden boardwalk in front of the Chateau Frontenac which costs $4 to go see.

From there I went to the tourist office and signed up for the 2 hour historic tour of Quebec City on foot. When I slipped them my fund raising card they gave me the tour for free. – awesome! I can not relate what I learned because it was all spoken and you really had to pay attention with all of the detail Mike our tour guide was giving. To sum it up he started with the formation of the city, the wars with Britain, the religious influence and finally how the lower parts of the city were developed. It was an excellent tour and at the end Mike gave me $10 and suggested that his tips should go to my fundraiser. It was a very noble thing to do as he is donating a bit of his lively hood to the cause.

Ken and family later tracked me down sitting at a bar in the lower city which is absolutely beautiful. I could spend about a week here no problem. We decided to go for diner with the plan to possibly watch the free Cirque-du-soleil show or the cities history video which is shown against the giant grain silos in the harbour. How cool is that?

Ken and Angela

Unfortunately another storm rolled in and drenched the city. We eventually went back to Ken’s parents and talked for a few hours. It was a real pleasure to meet Ken’s family and they were very gracious hosts. I will definitely come back for a visit and recommend that you do this as well.
