Stormtech

A big shout out to Stormtech who have donated some awesome gear for my trip. A supportive and thoughtful friend of mine Simone Lauridsen who works at Stormtech realized I needed some gear for the sometimes harsh Canadian environment. She picked out a fleece, wind breaker and some under garments that so happend to be my favourite colour.

I will let the company do their own talking but I will proudly wear their quality garments.

Travel Underwriters

Being a Business Analyst at Travel Underwriters has given me the chance to work with a great bunch of people. Everyone from our CEO Pat to our account managers back east have been extremely supportive of my cause, donating and spreading the word in their own little ways. Now, they’ve taken it a step further by setting up the “Ride For Jeff” initiative. “Ride For Jeff” enables my awesome colleagues at Travel Underwriters to raise money by biking for me. They can bike to work, or for the woefully bike-less, bike at work on a stationary bike the company has graciously set up.

Travel Underwriters has committed $1,000 towards my cause, and will donate a dollar for each kilometer everyone bikes. They’ve also posted a graphic on Facebookthat racks up $1 for every like and comment, and $2 for every post share.

Although I’d like to think “Ride For Jeff” was born out of my sheer popularity, it wasn’t.
They’re going to these lengths because they believe, like me, that a child should be able to take a drink of water without having to worry about getting cholera the next day. I really do appreciate sharing a workplace with such caring, supportive individuals. To them, my sincerest thanks.

June 3rd BBQ and bike ride!

Okay the details finally!

I sent off an evite to anyone subscribed to this page. This message will post on facebook as well in case you are following me there. I will also tweet it 🙂

Please RVSP through evite rather than respond to this post. Indicate how many guests and comment on how many vegetarians you will bring: Evite link!

For those who want to have a bit of fun you can join me in our casual ride from Richmond to Jericho pond. It will start at 10:30. Details can be found on this google map: Map of the ride.

I do have the volunteers I need and I will be sending them a private e-mail on the details once we have an idea on the number of people.

Looking forward to seeing you all – shit it is only 5 days away!!!!
Jeff

Updates and the count down has begun!

With 7 days to go I just wanted to post some updates:

BBQ is Sunday June 3rd at Jericho pond between 1pm and 3pm. I will send an evite to the people who are in town.
We have raised $5,300 which is over 70% in our fundraiser at water.org!!!!

The Forerunners runners had a potluck and raised $180 for my send off. Jean brought a beautiful cake for me and I made a little speech. Some photos from Lucy Chi:

My bicycle cake!

Cheers!

June 3rd eaters and well wishers

Well if people are going to bring food then we will need people to eat. I am still working out the details but I will be riding from Richmond to Spanish Banks. I want to get a rough idea of how many people might attend. Just comment on this post or send an e-mail to adollakilometer@gmail.com.

A few weeks before June 3rd I will send out another message to confirm who is really coming.

Other stuff:
I will be running the Vancouver Marathon this weekend – hopefully with special t-shirt. Come out and cheer me on! This is probably my last run until I get into the serious bike training. Stay tuned for some training videos and challenges, think of mountains!!!

June 3rd volunteers

Hey folks, I need between 8 – 10 volunteers for my send off Sunday June 3rd. We just need you for a few hours and of course you will not miss out on the festivities. You would be involved in one of the following: setting up a food table, taking turns on the Barbecue or helping clean up after. Most of the food will be prepared in advance so it is only a matter of putting it out and refilling stuff. Each volunteer will get a lovely “A dollar a kilometer” t-shirt which is worth its weight in gold. You can just leave a comment on this post if you are interested.

Spread the word!

Guess what?

We have almost reached $3,000 in donations and are only a few weeks in!

I can’t thank people enough for their generous donations and it really warms the heart while solidifying my purpose over the coming months. I also want to recognise that there are a million other charities out there and no one should feel obligated to donate nor should anyone feel guilty for not donating yet or ever. This is really about awareness and getting the message out. The donations will come, I know this!

What I really need to do is connect to a wider audience. If you let a work friend or distant relative know about my journey it may reach another 20 people you do not even know. If a handful of them donate or offer me a couch to sleep on it may ultimately do more for the cause.

Cheers!
Jeff

P.S. If you have a relative or friend that is willing to put me up for the night (I don’t snore like Gordon or John Glen) please send me an e-mail at adollarakilometer@gmail.com

First day: group ride Sunday June 3rd

Hey folks,

It looks like I will start my journey on Sunday June 3rd. I will start my ride in Richmond and have a pit stop at either Spanish Banks or Stanley Park for a BBQ event. I want to encourage all levels of riders to join me for the ride so we can make a statement! Barring making any kind of statement it would be nice for me to ride with friends and well wishers as a send off. Also, anyone can ride with me the first day of the city and I want to extend that to anywhere along my journey people are welcome to ride with me and share a conversation.

At this point nothing is formerly organised but I wanted to get the message out for those who might come.

Cheers!
Jeff
